What is Dual Licensure?

Dual licensure is the process of obtaining two separate licenses in the same profession. For example, a counselor may obtain both a licensed professional clinical counselor (LPCC) license and a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) license. Dual licensure is not required, but it can be a valuable option for individuals.

A grandfathering process was an option right after the LPCC license was established in California allowing LMFTs and LCSWs to get an additional LPCC license. This grandfathering period ended on December 31, 2011. 

Now if individuals want to obtain multiple mental health licenses in California they must complete the education, supervision, and examination requirements for both licenses.

How do I apply for dual licensure?

You will need to obtain multiple mental health licenses in California; they must complete the education, supervision and examination requirements for both licenses. This includes taking the California Law and Ethics Exam for both license types to ensure your ability to renew (separate applications, fees and exams). Can I double-count supervision hours for licensure?

Interns may apply supervised hours to both licenses as long as the supervision requirements for each license are completed. Note that there are some differences in the supervision requirements for each license, see CALPCCs page on APCC supervision to learn more.  

Associated will need to register as an intern for two licenses at the same time, so all of their hours can be applied toward both licenses.  Or, applicants can apply for a second registration any time during their first year of being an associate, but hours for the second license will only start to count, once the intern has received the second registration number.  

Can I double count continuing education hours?

Counting education hours can be applied to both licenses, as long as they are appropriate topics for each license. To learn more about counting education hour requirement see CALPCCs Continuing Education page.

• The need to stay up-to-date on the latest trends in both fields.

Is dual licensure right for me?

Dual licensure is a good option for therapists. However, it is important to weigh the benefits and challenges of dual licensure before deciding if it is right for you.
