How Does One Become an Approved Supervisor?
Approved supervisors must have documented two years of clinical experience as a licensed professional clinical counselor, marriage and family therapist, clinical psychologist, clinical social worker, or physician and surgeon certified in psychiatry in California. Supervisors must have received 6 hours of professional training in supervision within 60 days of supervising the first intern, and have a current and valid license that is not under suspension or probation. Supervisors cannot have provided therapeutic services to the clinical counselor trainee or intern, have a personal relationship that undermines the effectiveness of the supervision, or be a family member by blood or marriage. Can LPCCs supervise MFT Interns?
In order to supervise MFT Interns or PCCIs who are earning 500 hours in couples, families or children, LPCCs must have additional coursework and training, as specified in the LPCC Scope of Practice: Section 4999.20
- Six semester-units on the theory and application of marriage and family therapy or a named specialization or emphasis in marriage and family therapy on the qualifying degree.
- 500 hours of documented supervised experience working with couples, families or children.
- Six hours of continuing education specific to marriage and family therapy in each license renewal cycle.
